An MTCR outreach mission visited Chile on 26 and 27 September 2016. This was the first time ever that Chile was visited by an MTCR delegation.
The outreach mission coincided with Chilean efforts to review the current export control system and update relevant legislation in order to comply with the provisions of UNSCR 1540. Chile ultimately aims to join all four international export control regimes.
The MTCR delegation had open and productive meetings with the most important actors in the Chilean export control system. At the Ministry for Foreign Affairs discussions were held with the Directorate of International and Human Security (DISIN). Also, the undersecretary for Foreign Affairs received the MTCR Chair for a courtesy call. At the Ministry of Defence, the MTCR delegation met with representatives of Chilean export control authority Dirección General de Movilización Nacional (DGMN), the undersecretary of Defence, and the state defence company Fábrica y Maestranzas del Ejército (FAMAE). The outreach mission concluded with a meeting with the Dirección Regional Aduana Metropolitana and a site visit of Customs at Santiago International Airport.
The visit was the last of the outreach programme of the joint Netherlands-Luxembourg MTCR Chairmanship. The Republic of Korea will take over the chairmanship at the next MTCR plenary meeting in October 2016.
